Plot
The setting of the novel "Out of the Dust" takes place in Panhandle, Texas. The way the setting affects the character and the events is that it is the time during the Great Depression and the dust bowl which makes events for the characters difficult. The characters were not able to plant crops and always had dust in the houses and in the food they make, which made there lifestyle difficult. The conflicts in the novel was the dust storms causing people to have dust pneumonia and how the main character wanted to leave the Dust bowl. Billie Jo wondered what it would be like if she were out of the dust playing piano. Billie Jo realizes that she could never leave her father behind and goes back home, and the bond between Billie Jo and her father is renewed.
